love. He had a feeling D.J. didn't even believe in love.
D.J. completed their registration and led the way down an inner hall toward their rooms. She unlocked the first door, stepped through, and twisted the bolt on the connecting door. After dropping her suitcase on the bed she went back into the hall. Seconds later the other connecting door opened, creating a window between the two rooms.
"Do you care which side you take?" D.J. poked her head through the opening. "They're exactly the same."
Chris walked through to the other room and placed his laptop on a table between two chairs. "This is good."
"Suit yourself." She went through to the other side, and Chris heard her unpacking. He did the same. As he opened the zipper on his laptop, a piece of paper fell out. It was the list he'd made for D.J. that morningthe list of what he'd done and who he'd seen, and who might hate him enough to kill him.
"D.J.?" he called just as she came through the door.
"McCall, where's the list I told you to write?"
He held up the paper. She snatched it from his hand and bounced onto the bed.
After a moment she looked up at him with raised eyebrows. "You lead a boring life, McCall."
"I told you." Chris leaned against the dresser. He curled his fingers around the edge and fought the urge to sit next to her on the bed. Sitting close to D.J. could be a big mistake.
